SCM_Tr2.3 – Organising Development with HCL VersionVault and UCM

Targeted audience

This course is aimed at project managers, configuration managers, integrators, and manufacturing managers.

Training objectives

The objectives of this training are :

  • Implement HCL VersionVault Unified Change Management (UCM) on your projects
  • Create and configure your projects
  • Strengthen your process by implementing UCM rules
  • Integrate, build and maintain a software in a parallel development environment

Targeted skills

Upon completion of this training, the participant will be able :

  • Use the main commands used to manage metadata, elements, and views
  • Implement the proper patches
  • Identify sensitive data
  • Implement the necessary mechanism needed to secure them

Duration

2 days (the program can be adapted to the technological context and level of knowledge of the trainees).

  • The training can be assured in person or remotely
  • The training can take place on an inter-company or intra-company basis

Module 0 : Objectives of the training

Day 1

Introduction : Presentation of the objectives and of the unfolding of the training.

Round table : Presentation of the group, participants, and their expectations.

Module 1 : Introduction

Day 1

Objectives of the module:

  • Define what Configuration Management is
  • Describe the contents of a Configuration Management plan

Module 2A : Define Components, VOBs, and naming rules

Day 1

Objectives of the module:

  • Define the structure of Components
  • Define the structure of VOBs
  • Define the naming rules

Unfolding of the training : AFTERNOON

Module 2B : Streams and Views strategies

Day 1

Objectives of the module:

  • Develop a Stream strategy
  • Identify which type of View to use on a project

Module 2C : UCM Project Baselines and Policies

Day 1

Objectives of the module:

  • Define Baselines
  • Describe UCM Project policies

Module 2D : Change management process model

Day 1

Objectives of the module:

  • Choose a ClearQuest pattern for UCM
  • Selecting ClearQuest Policies

Unfolding of the training : MORNING

Module 3: Implementing a UCM project

Day 2

Objectives of the module:

  • Create a new UCM Project based on an existing code version
  • Select a Composite Baseline for a new UCM project
  • Create a Development Stream for a new function

Module 4 : Project maintenance

Day 2

Objectives of the module:

  • Add Components to an existing Project
  • Lock objects and set them to Obsolete
  • Create Triggers and associate them to a certain type to implement control policies
  • Assign activities to developers

Module 5 : Monitor the state of Projects

Day 2

Objectives of the module:

  • Track Baseline information
  • Track ClearQuest activities via graphs and reports
  • Create reports on VersionVault objects and events using Cleartool commands or the file browser
  • Run reports via the Report Builder

Unfolding of the training : AFTERNOON

Module 6 : Assembling and recommending Baselines

Day 2

Objectives of the module:

  • Lock and unlock a Stream
  • Create a Baseline for an activity
  • Create a Baseline for a single Component
  • Promote a Baseline.
  • Create a test Stream.

Module 7 : Manage multiple UCM Projects

Day 2

Objectives of the module:

  • Create a Project Mainline and Sub-Projects
  • Implement an Inter-Project delivery
  • Perform an Inter-Project Rebase

Training, technical and supervisory resources

Each course module will be covered in a hands-on exercise that will be performed via a remote ELM server provided and installed by ABlogiX. Each participant will have a computer already installed to access the ELM server.

Training support will be provided for each module and will be presented via a video projector or large screen. A whiteboard or interactive whiteboard should be provided with pens.

The training is facilitated by a consultant-trainer, which allows participants to benefit from his field experience.
